The system turned away 27.5% of applicants this year, with Santa Cruz, Davis and Irvine experiencing the greatest jumps in selectivity. A record number had applied to UC schools. The University of California confirmed today what applicants and guidance counselors already knew firsthand: It was harder to gain admission to many of UC's nine undergraduate campuses this year.

During the first week of March last year, April Sykes was leading the East Oktibbehea Titans into Mississippi's Class 1-A high school state girls basketball tournament title game. She had scored 39 points against McAdams in the semis before taking on Coldwater High for the championship in Jackson.
