Roger Wilbur “Bill” Fisher, 88, a former longtime Baker County resident, died Nov. 7, 2009, at his home at Echo. There will be a celebration of life service at 10 a.m. Thursday, at the Baker Elks Lodge, No. 338, 1896 Second St. Burial with military honors will be at 2 p.m. at the Haines Cemetery.

Federal stimulus funds may save some school positions previously on the chopping block. Madison County school officials also hope to use the money to restore summer school programs for younger students.

Honors: Shannon F. Kennedy of Janesville was given an Outstanding Recent Alumni award by UW-Whitewater during their Founders Day activities. Kennedy is the president of SASID Inc., a Web-based insurance company he founded with his brother, D. Shawn Kennedy.

Chelli Riddiough, a senior at West High School, is one of five students across the United States to win the 2009 Writing Portfolio Gold Medal in the national Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.
