As early as Nursery, East Woods students attend class in our state-of-the-art Science Lab. As the students move through the grades, the school enhances its math and science curriculum with studies in molecular biology, genetics and diverse technologies.
Throughout the school year, visual and performing arts events -- plays, concerts, exhibits and other presentations -- engage parents and community friends while strengthening curriculum and building the personal confidence of each participating student.
Involvement in the field of fine arts is an important and essential element in the education of our students. Art classes promote an enjoyment of the creative process, which motivates children to develop skills, confidence in their own expressive capabilities and a lifelong appreciation of the arts.
In the East Woods community, teachers know each student by name, and the students themselves form friendships that last a life time. The Commencement Ceremony is the culmination of the East Woods experience. This event is quite special, as the Head of School gives remarks about each graduate as he or she walks to the podium.
Learning a foreign language is an integral part of the East Woods experience. East Woods students begin Spanish instruction in Nursery. The students are taught both Spanish and French in the Third grade, and continue with both languages until they select one to focus on in Fifth grade. Every student is also required to take Latin in the Seventh grade.
All students are musicians at East Woods. They learn to appreciate music through singing, playing, creating and listening, from Pre-Nursery through Eighth grade. There are many performance opportunities throughout the year, both with a group or solo.
Soccer, basketball, ice hockey, lacrosse, baseball and softball teams play in their respective fall, winter and spring seasons, at junior varsity and varsity levels. Strengthening sports skills and good sportsmanship are essential components of the East Woods experience.
Commitment to community service is central to an East Woods education. Ever since its founding in 1946, East Woods has sought to teach its students the life-changing value of social responsibility. Students in all grades take active roles in community projects, from cleaning up local beaches to tutoring children who live in impoverished neighborhoods.
  • East Woods School supports and invests in each student. It partners with parents to open up doors for children. It is a small school -- by design. The low student-to-teacher ratio allows for individualized attention and differentiated instruction. This size allows each student to have the opportunity to lead, to contribute, and to “stand out.” The school does not follow the Core Curriculum, nor does it “teach to the test.” East Woods teaches children how to think versus simply what to think.

School Notes

  • East Woods is an exceptional, warm school that supports and invests in each student on his or her journey toward adulthood.  It is a thoughtful school, open to possibilities beyond the curriculum.  It partners with parents to open up doors for children as they explore their widening world.  We are an academic playground, where the adults lead with joy and humor…and high academic expectations.   We are a small school -- by design.  Our low student-to-teacher ratio allows for individualized attention and differentiated instruction.  Our size allows each student to have the opportunity to lead, to contribute, and to “stand out” in one way or another.  We have a clear understanding of who we are and our teachers truly understand who your child is…and could become.  We find joy in all of it. Our Nursery program is a wonderful combination of free-play, exploration and academics.  Whether during morning “discovery time” or while sitting in a circle reading a book by the Author of the Month, whether out on the playground with the class, or during their one-on-one time with each individual child, our nurturing and enthusiastic teachers bring out the best in our students. We do not follow the Core Curriculum, nor do we “teach to the test.”  We do encourage excellence in a family-centered, values-based community that treasures personal responsibility and respect for others.  We have a keen appreciation of the many ways in which individual students perform and grow – academically, artistically, socially, morally and civically.  We value and celebrate individual differences in our students and promote development of the individual as a whole person.  East Woods teaches children how to think versus simply what to think.  We are a place where leaders begin to lead. EWS children come to love education as an intellectual pursuit rather than simply to advance to the next grade.  They exhibit a confidence in social settings that you simply do not see in most children coming through the public school system.  They are prepared to function and excel in the world, not simply on a standardized test.
