School Notes

  • UNIQUE PROGRAMS
  • Independent Study: Every 11th and 12th grade student in good academic standing is eligible to spend two to three weeks in February and March doing a self-designed independent study research project or a professional internship. Recent ISIP projects have included legal assistance, language immersion, marketing, music composition, graphic design, architecture, desktop publishing, jewelry-making, firefighting, elementary education, and volunteering with a medical mission in Ecuador.
  • Alternative Course Contracts An Alternative Course Contract provides an opportunity for a student to take a course not offered in the regular curriculum. A student, in consultation with the Office of Student Services and a member of the GSA faculty, may design the curriculum and write a course proposal that will include a description of the course, goals and objectives, and the amount of credit to be earned.
  • Arts Festival Every spring the students and faculty at GSA spend a week celebrating the Arts. Local artists come to GSA and conduct dozens of workshops in the arts: dance, music, film, painting, poetry, creative writing, woodworking, metal-tooling, photography, and more. Students participate in arts workshops during the mornings, and enjoy all-school arts performances in the afternoons. All students are encouraged to join workshops.
  • Ocean Studies/Maine Skippers program-Hands on interactive study of Maine's ocean and waterways environment. Project based along with academic study.

Thank you for viewing the GSA's profile. In response to the reviewer commenting on a narrow negative aspect of our school we freely admit we are not perfect. Nor is any school for that matter. George Stevens Academy takes all matters of student behavior very seriously and does its very best to work with each student not only toward compliance but, toward their personal growth. Many times, due to privacy issues, the student body at large is not privy to corrective measures and may comment solely based on hearsay or partial information. George Stevens Academy has been educating students for many years and our successes far outweigh our shortcomings. We invite you to come see us and learn more about how GSA values our community.

didn't want to rate it 5 stars, but this site doesn't give me another option:: personally I had a very negative experience with George Stevens. If a student isn't an athlete or an exceptional student, or need special help, they are branded a bad student, and are neglected. George Stevens favorites kids who's parents have money and a popular name around the town. the money given to the school is used mainly for the exchange students, and there are many issues in the school that need fixing but have been put on the back burner. also many students are going through an addiction to the new "jul" or "vape" trend, and to combat that, George Stevens suspends kids, for a couple days, and then goes about as if nothing happened. as some of you know, coping with a nicotine addiction is hard and cannot be kicked to the curb after a simple suspension, it takes time that George Steven is not willing to commit to. if they truly cared for the kids and their well being, instead of making them miss school and their education for a couple days, they would hire an addiction counselor. there is so much more, for example last year the headmaster took his shirt off in from of the entire school, very inappropriate right? long story short, bad idea.. not a great school

My daughter attended GSA for four years. One of the best things about the school is that while it offers a challenging academic program that prepares students for college and continuing education, it draws students from across the peninsula; it "looks like" the broader community, not just a "prep" school for college-bound students. Students in my daughter's class were accepted to some of the most competitive colleges and universities in the U.S., but other students graduated and went directly to work. It is a small, caring, school whose teachers and staff really know and support the students. It's safe, creative, fun, and a great place to learn. Having a small boarding program of international students has made GSA even more interesting and globally connected.

Please take the time to quickly read this. This review doesn't come from the government or anything like that in the sort, it comes from a junior in this high school. I am literally PROUD to say I go to George stevens academy! Now some people make think I''m an honors student, which isn't the case I''m half honors half CP classes. To be frank, this school is one of the best, most vibrant, most teacher interactive, most safe, kind, understanding, prospecting school you will ever see. Sure it's small and a bit shabby on the outside; but what you find in the teachers is like nothing in the world. You are given so many options to choose and work with, there is even a steel band as you saw which I myself am a strong supporting member of! Just please, if your child wants freedom to achieve without being judged or wants to be part of the school NOT just there; or even is looking for something a tinyyyy bit deeper in which you are connected by your soul not just your brain. I recommend this school to the highest degree! Please please please come and visit, you will be greeted with warm welcoming hearts from both teachers and students.
