Struggling parochial schools have been told they will have to tighten their belts even further next year if the city gives the green light on eliminating funding for school nurses at private elementary schools with fewer than 300 students.

Proposed budget cuts by Mayor Michael Bloomberg put school nurses at risk. Private schools in the City are mandated to have nurses, but proposed cuts would eliminate their funding in private schools with fewer than 300 students.

More than 30 teachers, including three from a Whitestone elementary school who saved their colleague’s life after he collapsed last month, were recognized by state Sen. Frank Padavan (R−Bellerose) last week during a ceremony at the Queens Farm Museum.
