School Notes Overview: |
School of Our Lady, a Catholic elementary school, is committed to the education of the child. We strive to create an education responsive to the spiritual, intellectual, social, psychological, and physical needs of the student. Our aim is to provide opportunities for students to discover, explore, and develop their own God-given potential so that they will have a positive effect on society. Our task is to build sound foundations upon which our students can construct meaningful and purposeful lives. We do this in partnership with the parents who have the primary responsibility for the education of their children. Education at School of Our Lady promotes the formation of Catholic moral and religious values that will enable students to make Christian choices in an increasingly secular and pluralistic society. Our goal is to help the students to recognize themselves as children of God and to perceive that their personal, moral decisions can make positive contributions toward creating a better world. - CURRICULUM DESIGN :
In general, School of Our Lady follows the course of instruction issued by the Office of Faith Formation in the Orange Diocese, and that of the State of California. Immediate Scope and Sequence information found in the Teacher Manuals governs daily learning.
KINDERGARTEN : Kindergarten is an academic program that helps five and six year olds develop language, motor, and social behavior skills. Textbooks in reading readiness, language arts, mathematics and religion are used to help develop skills and attitudes. Learning units in science and health are used. Reading is taught in kindergarten. Teachers of music/art, physical education, computer, and library develop the curriculum and classes for the children.
SUBJECTS : Subjects are organized around the four main areas of religion, mathematics, reading, and English, yet also include the basic courses in social studies, science, spelling, health, and physical education. Art, music, and computer are incorporated as core subjects.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION : The Physical Education program consists of lessons to build and strengthen large and small motor coordination using calisthenics, relays, tumbling, ball handling, and other skills for various life situations.
EDUCATIONAL TRIPS : Each class participates in educational field trips during the school year. Field trips are determined and organized at the discretion of the teacher with the assistance of parents, and permission of the principal. These trips are related to the curriculum studied and are supervised by the teachers and parents. The students will travel by chartered bus or private cars. Our school insurance covers students while on sponsored trips.
TECHNOLOGY : The computer lab contains iMacs and printers which are used for student instruction. Software for grades kindergarten through eighth has been purchased by the school to enrich and enhance grade appropriate instruction. Kindergarten through eighth classes are assigned a time in the daily academic schedule for computer class. Instruction covers technology skills necessary to meet grade level expectations and requirements, plus work in all subject areas: i.e. - mathematics, language arts, social studies, reading, spelling, composition and Fine Arts. PCs will be used and incorporated into academic instruction in the classrooms.
LIBRARY : All grades have the privilege of using the library. It is a time for reading, study and research.
INCLUSION PROGRAM : School of Our Lady has an inclusion teacher on campus five days a week to work with students who have been identified as needing special services to insure academic success. The objective of the Inclusion Program is:
To identify the area of academics which needs to be strengthened in the particular student.
To prescribe an education plan to meet the needs of the student, based on the identified information.
To implement the education plan, using the Student Success Team, in order to insure the continuous academic progress of the student.
