School Notes

  • Allium Montessori is an innovative elementary school in Cambridge, MA, serving students ages 6-12. Allium's authentic Montessori experience is the vision of the Head of School Judy Dwyre, an AMI-trained Montessori teacher with a background in neuroscience from Johns Hopkins, and Jenny Tak, a multilingual literature teacher with a master's degree from Teachers College, Columbia University.
  • Montessori Education. Allium prioritizes a three-hour uninterrupted work cycle, which allows students freedom to choose their own work, move at their own pace, and concentrate deeply. Students receive individualized lessons from teachers and then use hands-on materials to explore concepts within a variety of subject areas, including grammar, economic geography, geometry, advanced math, and music composition. Students also frequently apply their understanding through integrated projects. Thus, the Montessori work cycle supports mastery of complex concepts and development of executive functioning skills, including the ability to self-manage and plan toward goals. In our mixed-aged classroom, students also learn from peers and grow in leadership and responsibility.
  • Teacher-led Micro-school. Allium is an intentionally small, close-knit community, where teachers develop deep, sustained relationships with students and their families. As administrative and curricular decision-makers, teachers can respond to students' academic and social-emotional needs promptly and holistically. In addition, empowered teachers model leadership rooted in creativity, humility, and courage.
  • Community Partnerships. Allium is located in Harvard Square, so students take frequent trips on foot to Harvard's museums of natural history, anthropology, and art history to learn about the world and in turn, themselves. Teachers are also intentional about connecting students with people in our diverse community, in order to listen to their stories and learn from them. For example, students participate in intergenerational literacy projects with our friends at Youville Assisted Living Residences and serve food to homeless neighbors at the Friday Cafe across the Cambridge Common. Our students' investment in their community builds a foundation for life-long civic participation, including the ability to navigate multiple perspectives, resolve conflicts, and create positive change.
  • Allium school hours are 8:30 am - 3:15 pm, with after care available until 6:00 pm. Allium's vacation weeks align with the Cambridge Public School calendar. Scholarships and financial assistance are available. Prior experience in a Montessori setting is not required to attend. Allium is a member of the Wildflower Schools Network. Allium is our dream school. Judy, Jenny and Hira are incredible teacher leaders and have made possible safe, in-person learning during COVID. Our son is thriving in this engaging, personalized Montessori elementary environment—where he is known and cared for in his academic, social and emotional development.

Our child started at Allium this year. He is absolutely thriving and loves school. In fact, on the days he isn't at school, he tells us that the least favorite parts of those days are not going to school. The teacher-leaders at Allium are incredible. They pay close attention to our child's strengths and growth areas and very intentionally set the table for him to both succeed but also work hard and struggle through things. In a very short time, we've seen incredible growth in his academic and social skills, as well as his ability to focus and work independently. I recommend Allium without reservations - this school is a true gem and one-of-a-kind.
