Rockland Country Day School is one of the newest members of the Green Schools Alliance. The Green Schools Alliance (GSA) was created by schools for schools, and is working with and through pre-K to grade 12 schools worldwide to empower youth, raise environmental awareness, build global community, and support school leadership to meet their climate and sustainability goals. Head of School Brian Mahoney commented, "Our association with the GSA will help us drive our green initiatives forward. We are excited that RCDS has become part of a growing and important organization as we work to increase the environmental sustainability of the School." Student, faculty, and the School's interest in the environment have driven the School’s actions in this area. Recently RCDS agreed to be a part of the Great American Clean-up. The Middle School accepted the challenge of cleaning up “Black Beach” in Haverstraw through Keep Rockland Beautiful and the Littoral Society. In addition, students, led by Kathy Hoehmann and Shannon Hubertus, are exploring other programs, with support and guidance from GSA that will reduce the overall carbon footprint of the School. posted on October 28, 2009 at 12:00:00 am
Brice Dorwart, an ISA (International Society of Arboriculture) arborist, recently offered his time and came to the RCDS campus to share some of his knowledge of botany. The purpose of the visit was to help instructors Honey Dickson and Shannon Hubertus with a special project they are conducting with the third and seventh grades. The project is part of a larger celebration of the School's 50th anniversary. The project requires that the students work together to identify and learn about some of the oldest trees on the campus, while also observing how they have changed both in the long and short-term. For example, each student in Ms. Dickson’s third-grade class has chosen a specific tree to observe and respond to. Students will be looking for seasonal changes, identifying species and learning scientific nomenclature. They will also do creative writing and artwork, including botanical drawing, rubbings and more. - New head of Rockland Country Day brings youth, enthusiasm to job (The Journal News)
