What Is an Independent School? Definition & Guide 2025
Explore what defines an independent school in 2025 — governance, mission, cost, enrollment and how to evaluate independent schools as a parent or educator.

What Is an Independent School?

In the landscape of U.S. K-12 education, the term independent school is often used alongside, and sometimes interchangeably with, private school. Yet, for parents, students and educators seeking clarity in 2025, it’s useful to distinguish what sets an independent school apart and why that matters.

Defining the Term

At its core, an independent school is a private, non-government school that is self-governing and self-funding. According to the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), independent schools “provide students with individualized attention … are independent in governance and finance.”
More specifically:

  • Governance: Independent schools are governed by a self-perpetuating board of trustees or governors, rather than by a church diocese, public school district, state agency, or for-profit entity.

  • Finance: They are financially independent of public funding, relying primarily on tuition, gifts/endowments and charitable contributions, giving them freedom in program design and operations.

  • Mission-driven: Independent schools typically follow their own mission, curricular design and admission policies rather than public-school or diocesan mandates.

In short, while all independent schools are private schools, not all private schools are independent in this specific sense. This distinction helps families understand what they are choosing.

Why the Distinction Matters

For many parents and educators, what sets an independent school apart is the increased flexibility in curriculum, staffing, facilities and culture. For instance:

My Experience Teaching in Private Schools

Over two decades ago, I taught Latin, English, World History, Music, and Computers in private schools. I also served as Deputy Director of a school in The Bahamas. My classes never exceeded 15 students, allowing me to truly know each learner and adjust lessons to meet their needs.

Parents valued the education we provided and supported learning at home. While today’s classrooms face challenges from smartphones and social media, private schools still foster strong parent-school partnerships. Although lesson planning and grading were demanding, the professional satisfaction was unmatched.

Advantages of Working in a Private School

Flexible Curriculum

Unlike public school teachers, who must often “teach to the test” to prepare students for state exams, private school educators have more freedom to innovate. While private

Private Schools: 10 Key Challenges for Families
Explore the top 10 challenges families face in private schools in 2025, from affordability to admissions, with expert insights and strategies.

Private Schools: 10 Challenges You Will Face

Private schools in the United States continue to attract families who want rigorous academics, small class sizes, and strong extracurricular programs. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, more than 4.7 million students are currently enrolled in private elementary and secondary schools nationwide. While the advantages are significant, choosing a private school also comes with challenges that parents must anticipate and plan for.

In 2025, affordability, competition, and shifting educational priorities make the private school landscape both rewarding and complex. Here are the 10 most important challenges you will face—and how to navigate them successfully.

1. The Cost of Tuition

The most pressing concern for most families remains tuition. Private school tuition can range from $10,000 per year at a parish-affiliated elementary school to more than $65,000 annually at elite boarding schools.

Additional expenses, such as books, technology fees, uniforms, extracurriculars, and travel for boarding students, can raise total costs significantly. Even schools with strong financial aid programs cannot fully offset the financial strain for many middle-income families.

Tip for parents: Compare the full “all-in” cost, not just tuition. Many schools offer need-based aid, sibling discounts, or merit scholarships. Families should also research 529 savings plans, which, since 2018, allow up to $10,000 annually to be used for K–12 tuition (IRS Guidance).

2. The Competitive Admissions Process

Extracurricular Activities: Why They Are so Important

Extracurricular Activities: Why They Are so Important
Extracurricular activities are not an extra in a private school. They are an integral part of the program each school offers.

How can extracurricular activities possibly be important? After all, aren't they extras? Unfortunately, in these tough economic times, that is very often the case in public schools where all too often local education leaders view extracurricular activities as extras. As they have faced declining tax revenues, public schools have had to make some drastic cuts in their budgets. School boards have a hard time justifying cutting the number of teachers. They run up against the same problem with course offerings. So, school boards and administrators look for programs which they can eliminate or, at least, reduce expenditures. Accordingly, they decide to cut the extras. In the public school world, those extras include extracurricular activities such as a band or orchestra, as well as clubs and other activities.

On the other hand, for private schools, extracurricular activities are an integral part of the school's offerings. Solid academics, a variety of athletic programs and an assortment of extracurricular activities are essentials in private schools. Most private schools believe that you cannot educate a child solely by teaching her academic subjects. While math, science and all the other subjects are an important part of her schooling, there is much more to education than just academics. That's where sports and extracurricular activities come in. They allow your child to grow. They stimulate her with new ideas and new ways of thinking. They give her a sense of accomplishment and build her confidence. They teach tolerance and encourage teamwork. These are all excellent

Sports: Part Of A Balanced Education

Sports: Part Of A Balanced Education
Sports are important in private schools. But they are also balanced properly by the emphasis on solid academics.

One of the components of a quality private school education is sports. A great many private schools offer athletic programs which rival many colleges and universities. Lest you get the wrong idea, academics are paramount in a private school experience. But private schools truly do adhere to the ancient motto mens sana in corpore sano - a healthy mind in a healthy body. Consequently even the most unathletic students in any private school community are required to do some kind of sports on a regular basis. Many boarding schools have a half day on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The afternoons are given over to athletics.

Athletics are one part of a comprehensive program most schools adopt to educate the whole child in mind, body and spirit. What do you do if your child is not athletically inclined? Don't worry. Schools are accustomed to students with just about every background you can think of. Your child will surprise you after a few weeks at school by exclaiming "Mommy! I love sprinting!" If you live within driving distance of her school, even better. You can attend games. We used to enjoy driving up to the old girls' campus of Kent School on Skiff Mountain to watch our daughter play field hockey. The toughest issue with boarding school athletics which she will encounter is which ones to select.

The intramural and varsity sports attract enthusiastic squads and are very competitive. They practice and compete in fine facilities. Check out the athletic programs
