School Notes

  • Columbia is a classical, Christian elementary/middle school owned and operated by Bethany Lutheran Church.
  • It is open to families of all faiths.
  • Students are expected to follow the requirements in the student handbook including the dress code (uniforms) and all academic subjects in our curriculum.
  • "Classical" for us means we teach the traditional liberal arts.
    • Our curriculum teaches traditional elementary/middle-school subjects as they contribute to the classical Trivium of grammar, logic, and rhetoric.
    • Our Trivium-based instruction includes Latin, composition, and formal logic.
    • We also include elements of the Quadrivium in the form of hands-on science, mathematics, history, and music.
    • The Christian worldview held by confessional Lutherans determines our overall focus. Our emphasis is on God's redemption of sinful mankind through His only-begotten Son, providing certainty of forgiveness and everlasting life to everyone who hears this message. We teach it in brief daily chapel devotions, in our daily school operation, and a thorough introduction to the Bible.
    • We use small (max. 15) classrooms containing multiple grades of students, affording flexibility to provide learning opportunities for every student.
  • We teach everything in light of the traditional Christian faith as expressed in the Apostles' Creed and the Small Catechism of Dr. Martin Luther.
  • All students participate in all aspects of our program to the extent that their gifts allow.
