School Notes

  • Tidepool Preparatory Academy is an independent, nonprofit K–5 school in Sequim, Washington. We opened in fall 2026 with a clear purpose: Nourishing curious minds for deeper waters. The school is built on three pillars: outdoor education, academic rigor, and musicianship, and we believe children learn best when all three are part of every day. Outdoor education. The Olympic Peninsula is part of our classroom. Students spend time in the school garden and nearby green spaces such as Carrie Blake Park, where they observe, explore, and connect what they learn to the world around them. Time outdoors builds curiosity, resilience, and a sense of place. Academic rigor. Our curriculum is project based. Students take on meaningful, hands-on projects that combine reading, writing, math, science, and the arts, which teaches them to ask good questions, work together, and see their work through. Instruction follows state learning standards, so families know exactly what their child is learning and how that learning builds from year to year. Students take part in state testing, which gives families and teachers a clear, objective measure of progress over time. Multi-age classrooms. Our classrooms bring together students of different ages. Younger children learn from older peers, and older students deepen their own understanding by mentoring. Small classes and multi-age groupings let teachers know each child well and meet students where they are, whether a child is ready to move ahead or needs more time. Musicianship. Music is part of the core program, not an extra. Students build real musical skills and share them with the community. This year's performances include a fall concert at the band shell and a winter concert in December. Community. As a young school, we are building our traditions together with our families. Events such as our fall family haunted house and family workshops, bring families, students, and staff together outside the classroom. After School Club. Our After School Club serves grades K–5 five days a week with outdoor play, music, and hands-on enrichment. Enrolled Tidepool students can stay until 5:00 p.m., and children from other schools are welcome to join as well. Tidepool Montessori (coming January 2027). We plan to open Tidepool Montessori in January 2027. It will be a licensed, full-day Montessori preschool for children ages 3–5, with a 10:1 student-to-staff ratio. Tidepool Montessori will be the only full-time Montessori program in the county and will give local families high-quality early learning and dependable full-day care, while supporting working families. Tidepool Prep is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and gifts to the school are tax deductible. Families are warmly invited to visit, meet our teachers, and see a school day in action.
