- School Motto: Ad Lumen
- School Mascot: Minuteman
- Newark Academy has a proud history of providing a rigorous academic program to students in grades 6-12 while paying scrupulous attention to the building of character. Newark Academy students are young men and women who are committed to their own intellectual development while making positive contributions to their school and to the greater community in which they live. At Newark Academy, students learn through dialogue with both teachers and peers. Newark Academy challenges its young people to think for themselves and to use their growing talents in the service of others. Newark Academy's goal is not just to teach content but to help students learn to think for themselves, to engage with challenging ideas, to peruse learning for its own sake. "Ad Lumen," our school motto, means "toward enlightenment," and it reflects our desire not just to educate students, but to develop in them good habits of mind: intellectual curiosity, effective planning and use of time, skill in working with others. At Newark Academy, students develop intellectual curiosity that will inspire them to be lifelong learners, even when the daily rigors of school are but a distant memory. Our students' value arts and athletics, and we encourage participation in both. With 20 extracurricular offerings in the visual and performing arts, and 31 athletic teams, we provide an outlet for a wide variety of passions and talents. Inevitably, students will be leaders in some areas and simply participants in others, but they all develop talents and abilities that contribute to their success well into the future. Newark Academy's culture is one of involvement and service to others and supports a spirit of cooperation and community both in and out of the classroom. We recognize that a responsible educational program is best served by an inclusive community with students and teachers of diverse backgrounds. Newark Academy students learn about the causes and implications of global issues. They develop the skills to be resilient both academically and personally, and to appreciate a variety of opinions and perspectives. Many of our students have lived abroad or have family in other countries and are drawn to our school by the opportunity to engage with different cultures on a daily basis. We offer off-campus study programs and international travel experiences that enrich our students' experience and foster a dynamic campus environment. Many of our most dedicated students elect to pursue an International Baccalaureate diploma, immersing them in a rigorous, globally focused curriculum. The school's founding predates American independence and blends the best of the old and the new. Visit Newark Academy and you will see a community where students are happy to be at school, and where teachers delight in the challenges of inspiring, educating and supporting them.
