School Notes

  • We follow a mixed academic model (50/50), taking best practices from both German and American approaches. This hybrid methodology focuses on independence, exploration, reasoning, and creative problem-solving in the classroom. Our goal is to instill a lifelong passion and aptitude for learning within every child. GSB accepts non-German speakers and German speakers with limited German reading or writing proficiency. We always say "the earlier the better" when it comes to language learning, and we support our students through additional language support in all grades. If applying at the third-grade level or higher, students must be performing well academically at their current school in order to be accepted to GSB. Part of the admissions process is a school review of current report cards and a student interview with a member of our school leadership team.

As a parent of two children attending German School Brooklyn, I can confidently say this school has exceeded our expectations in every way. Both of our kids, currently in 5th and 8th grade, have absolutely thrived here, not only academically but socially and emotionally as well. The bilingual curriculum is outstanding. Our children are fluent in both German and English, and it's been incredible to watch their confidence grow in both languages. The small class sizes mean that each child receives personalized attention, and the teachers are truly invested in their students' growth. They're warm, approachable, and incredibly skilled at nurturing curiosity and creativity. What we love most, though, is the strong sense of community. From parent events to student-led projects, there's a real feeling of togetherness and shared values. The school blends German educational rigor with a progressive, child-centered approach, which is the perfect combination for our family. We couldn't be happier with our decision to join GSB-it's more than a school; it's a place where our children feel seen, supported, and excited to learn every day.

German School Brooklyn has been my home for many years. I attended this school from second to eighth grade and have only great things to say about my experience. The academic programs at GSB are beyond grade level with a curriculum that will set you up for success. A very engaged, dedicated faculty is a unique quality of this school, as it creates an effective learning environment. Though GSB is a smaller school, it allows teachers to give students individualized attention, giving children more confidence when asking questions, engaging in group activities, and opportunities for one-on-one time with the teachers. The brand new school building which is under construction will be finished and ready by the 2022/23 school year! This new site features a basketball court, and soccer field on the roof and offers much more space for activities such as music, art, and anything else a student may want to pursue. GSB has always been open to developing and creating new things when it comes to an interest that students may have. They have developed partnerships with excellent theater and soccer programs, as well as international universities. This new building will only add to the special things this school already has to offer and I truly believe this new building will make a difference. German School Brooklyn provides a safe, inclusive learning environment which makes it possible to have such a great experience!
