School Notes

  • The Cardinal Hickey Academy is a Catholic School of the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C. The Academy recognizes that human dignity requires that each person act out of conscious and free choice, as moved and drawn in a personal way from within. The Academy embraces a sacred respect for this process and individual conscience. The Academy serves the educational needs of the Catholic families in northern Calvert County and southern Anne Arundel County.

We thought we were getting a Catholic, Christ centered school, but the way families have been treated at this school is so far from Christ in our opinion. Many families are now leaving the school and enrollment was already low. The school use to require testing to be admitted. Now they are taking students who are expelled from other schools. We use to have a Home School Association, but for many years the culture has been to block any parent communication. Teachers have reported that they were advised to limit their communication with parents. Starting in the preschool Montessori program, we were advised it was an accredited program. Come to find out it isn't an accredited program like other schools in the area. Several parts of the school including the bathrooms are run down and money doesn't seem to go to improvements for the school, but who would know because despite tuition increase parents never receive copies of the budget. I would not recommend this school to anyone and immensely regret sending my children there. The principal was just fired after the school was investigated by the state for numerous reports of negligence. It is unclear why she was even hired for the school given she was terminated from her last position. Apparently the head administrator was aware of this when he hired her. A new principal will be walking into a HORNET'S NEST because the head administrator is still there. Ask around and you will find out that for many years, families have tried to have him removed, but the ADW will not remove him despite significant complaints and him blatantly lying to parents. After numerous cases of sexual assault last year, this year there was a reported suspected potential school violence incident and instead of taking it seriously, the school wrote a letter to the parents of the child who reported the incident stating they were not to talk to other parents again or they would be removed from the school. One should also ask why the school counselor left after only being there three months?

CHA has been a great experience. I couldn`t imagine going anywhere else. The teachers so far have been lovely, I am impressed with the educational experience my child has had. The Catholic education has helped us create a faith based foundation for our child.

We have experienced a wonderful education for our child at CHA. The religious education is the best I have seen. I myself attended Catholic schools, and this education is very thorough. I am learning along with my child, it is special to share.

This is a wonderful faith filled school that has taught my children the most important thing in life "How to treat people and have compassion for others" The education was excellent and has been a great foundation for my child to continue to high school as well.

Cardinal Hickey Academy is a Blue Ribbon school that truely stands out from all other private schools in the area. My children love to go to school everyday and everyone there is a part of our family. This school is the best that you could choose to send your child to.

Cardinal Hickey Academy is an outstanding private school that not only teachers its students the values to live by, but also provides a top notched education that you will not receive in other schools in the area. The students are well disciplined at an early age so that they may handle the rigorous academic program this school offers each child. The facility is beautiful. The classrooms are spacious and the new wing provides an updated computer lab, lecture hall, and a brand new library. The school s extracurricular activities focus on the arts with a school wide musical that involves grades 5 through 8 each year. The children also love the many sport teams that the school organizes for league play.
