School Notes

E.A. Young Academy is founded on the philosophy that gifted, talented and high ability scholars:

  • thrive in an educational setting with other advanced scholars where the curriculum is differentiated and allows for mindful, in-depth study
  • require thoughtful attention to their social/emotional development
  • do not benefit from a setting that fails to make demands on their abilities
  • require faculty who are uniquely trained to select and adapt the content of curriculum to the mental caliber of each scholar they teach

Instructional Theory

Scholar centric education starts with detailed, multi-dimensional information about where each child is on his/her learning journey. At E. A. Young, matching curriculum with the learning styles, expression styles, interests, and abilities of scholars is central to creating life-long learners.

Instructional strategies are then adapted to each scholar`s specific learning needs. Strategies for each scholar incorporate:

  • Personalized instruction
  • Project-based learning driven by constructivist pedagogy
  • Technology-infused environment and incorporation of 21st Century Skills
  • Individual/group projects complemented by multiple teaching and learning approaches
  • Differentiated instruction
  • Authentic Assessment

AP Capstone Program and Diploma

E.A. Young Academy is proud to offer the newly developed and prestigious College Board AP Capstone Program.  The AP Capstone Program is an innovative program focusing on the critical inquiry, research and communication skills.

Developed in direct response to feedback from higher education faculty and college admission officers, AP Capstone complements the in-depth, subject-specific rigor of Advanced Placement courses and exams as well as the hands-on, minds-on philosophy that epitomizes an E.A. Young Academy educational journey.

The AP Capstone program is officially an Upper School endeavor but the life long skills needed to be successful in the program begin early at Young Academy.  Beginning in Kindergarten, each scholar participates in Quest, a dedicated, intentional time each day to Question, Understand, Evaluate, Synthesize, Team Build, Transform and Transmit.  This framework equips scholars with the power to explore academic and real-world issues from multiple perspectives. Through a variety of approaches scholars are challenged to explore complex questions; understand and evaluate opposing viewpoints; interpret and synthesize information; and develop, communicate and defend evidence-based arguments. Additionally scholars to design, plan and conduct in depth investigations on a topic of their choosing by using research methodology; employing ethical research practices; and accessing, analyzing and synthesizing information to present an argument. EAYA is an excellent school for those looking for a challenging, creative, personalized environment. We've been with them for a few years and my Upper Schooler has thrived here after getting lost in the crowd at our local public school. The school emphasizes mastery of material and teachers provide the 1on1 needed to be successful. EAY leverages the AP Capstone program to the scholars` benefit, easily seen through their college acceptance rate (and scholarship awards!) With a heavy focus on project based, collaborative research, deep friendships and a passion for learning result. Work is well paced to support curriculum demands, but also allows for outside interests. My son is learning what he needs to succeed and become a critical thinker, without drowning in rote busy work. As a businessperson, one unique program I love ... The children are involved in the running of the school through their Fiery Hills micro-society and learn the value of entrepreneurship and personal responsibility through daily jobs and market events. They've designed their own monetary system and hold market days where students create products or services to sell/buy using currency earned during school jobs. Parental volunteer hours also earn "Firehawk $" and parents are encouraged to participate. Most recently, with many friends lamenting about a poor remote learning experience this spring with COVID19, I can say happily "not at Young". To their credit, EAYA was retooled and running remotely within a few days, holding core classes in full... labs, homework, daily instruction and project collaboration, etc. The transition was amazing. They are already fully prepared for this fall, giving me confidence that my child will be well prepared for SATs, etc. this coming year. I truly cannot say enough about how hard these teachers work to support their kids.

We are so happy at Young. My high school students accelerated academic needs are met, and she is challenged every day. Time isn't wasted on pointless busywork, but is spent in discussion, writing, and active researching and learning.

Our daughters have attended EA Young Academy (EAYA) since EAYA's first year. We LOVE it! Our daughters love school. EAYA is like an extended family for them and us. They can be who they are while learning in a supportive and challenging environment. They love the project-based learning approach to education. They embrace the growth mindset to their education. Our daughter that graduated from EAYA found that she was well prepared for college. The education that my daughters are receiving at EAYA is life changing for them and for our family.

This is my 3rd-grade son's first year at Young. We all absolutely love this school (enough to drive 30 minutes each way for it). He started in public school but was bored even with the gifted programming. Young does a great job of allowing GT kids to thrive and keep them challenged. My son said he finally felt like a student, not just like he could teach the class. The curriculum is accelerated and deep, and because of the size and design of the program, it is differentiated to meet the needs of each individual student. Even though his school day is about an hour longer than it was at his old school, his main complaint is that his day goes by too fast! He is always a little disappointed when there is a school holiday because he just loves going to school every day. His days consist of the traditional subjects, but also include art, performing arts, music and health promotion several times per week. They also enjoy Maker Lab (think engineering/coding type stuff), Quest, where so far he has been learning about himself as a learner, what it means to be gifted and how that comes with its own set of challenges and how to handle them. Young also offers an array of after-school activities like Rock Band, art club, chess club, etc. The kids also learn about being citizens and entrepreneurs through the school's micro society and philanthropic groups. We found the tuition to be a great value for the type of education and community our son is receiving. The common theme among all the new parents this year was "Where was this school when I was a kid? I wanted to go here!".

All 3 of my children are attending EA Young Academy. EAYA is a life altering school. My oldest, who now is a junior, attended the local IB Charter School, but we realized in 3rd grade he was no longer challenged and his needs were not met (we did try and work with the school's administrators). After lots of research we made the choice to give EAYA a try, this was 7 years ago. All my children are different and EAYA meets their individual needs. Single subject or multi subject acceleration are the norm. My children academic and social needs are being met on a daily bases. The Administration and teachers have the wellbeing of their scholars as number 1 priority and always open for suggestions and improvements. Not only are my boys receiving an excellent education, they are allowed to become who they were meant to be, without the concern of bullying, cliques and having to hide their gifts to fit in. They LOVE going to school every day.

We absolutely love EAYA! The classes are small, and the school focuses on individualized learning and celebrating the uniqueness of each child. Our son started here in kindergarten last year and is thriving in reading, writing and math. I'm constantly amazed at the subject matter the kids are learning at such a young age. The teachers, faculty, and administration are inspiring and truly passionate about creating an environment for kids to love learning.

We absolutely love EA Young Academy (the total enrollment of 39 isn't accurate anymore, we''ve got more Firehawks)! This school is an amazing environment for gifted learners. Both the academic and social/emotional needs of the scholars are nurtured. The students are truly engaged in project based learning (both individual & group). We can't say enough positive things about the faculty, staff and other families at the school.
