The Giant Steps Foundation works with those it supports to help minimize their impact on our fragile earth.
By offering greening grants for special events, the foundation helps organizations offer their members and constituents organic menus, including organic meat, poultry, and dairy products that are not only healthier but more humane.
Additionally, greening grants enable the use of recycled paper and plant-based inks as well as the purchase of carbon-offsets to help achieve a climate-neutral event.

I could not be happier with the care that my son has received since he first started attending this school. In the beginning, leaving him was extremely hard given our naivete and full understanding/acceptance of his diagnosis and the fresh memory of his rejection/nonacceptance in the public sector. I was welcomed to "drop-in" unexpectedly until I felt secure that he was in the best place for him. I was always happy with what I saw. The children were engaged in activities, having quiet moments to reflect, learning ADLs and Vocational skills. Everything is at their own pace and level of ability. Digging in the garden, singing, making bird feeders, painting, riding bikes, wiping the tables down, baking muffins... Actually, better than a "normal" school or home or playground environment because there isn't the looming "hurry up and get it done" mentality. Our 21st-century concept that "more is better" and we have to multitask to be successful. Like we're all rushing to "get through it" so we can catch a bus. Giant Steps actually nurtures each individual child. They don't push for the destination. They allow the child to enjoy the ride. And, while I have personally witnessed the occasional major "behavior" I have never seen a staff member overreact or mishandle a situation. They would surround and instinctively safeguard the child, separate him from the other students and diffuse his anxiety. It was done so proficiently that were you not immediately in the area to witness the "behavior" you would have no idea that there had been a meltdown. I only wish that I had the same expertness when my child was first diagnosed. There would have been far less frustration and fewer tears for both of us. These people have the patience of Job and the wisdom of Solomon. I trust them implicitly with my son and they have helped me become the parent he needs. There is always positive reinforcement and lessons are given in visual, audible, tactile modes. No one is distracted or frustrated with material because he hasn't been reached or because he is bored. The lessons are geared to the child's skill set. My son learns best with is hands and can become very emotional or completely disengaged when he is overwhelmed. Giant Steps picked up on this immediately and lessons were geared to his tactile nature. He is constantly challenged and can't wait to go every morning. He has grown beyond what I would have believed possible. They have steered us through some rough waters; what with puberty, medication changes, bouts of sickness, you name it. Thank God for Giant Steps!
